Cremini vs. Shiitake Mushrooms: What’s the Difference & Why We Use Both

Cremini vs. Shiitake Mushrooms: What’s the Difference—and Why We Use Both

Not all mushrooms taste the same.

Some are mild and familiar. Others bring a deep, savory flavor that can completely change a dish. That’s exactly why, when we created our Roasted Mushroom Soup, we didn’t want to choose just one.

We chose cremini and shiitake mushrooms.

But what’s actually the difference?

What Are Cremini Mushrooms?

Cremini mushrooms—sometimes called baby bellas—are actually younger versions of portobello mushrooms. They have a firmer texture and a deeper, earthier flavor than the classic white button mushroom.

They’re versatile, familiar and give dishes that classic mushroom flavor without overpowering everything else.

Think of cremini as the foundation.

What Are Shiitake Mushrooms?

Shiitake mushrooms are a different variety entirely and are known for a much more pronounced savory, earthy flavor. They’re especially associated with umami—that deep, satisfying fifth taste that makes foods taste rich and savory.

If cremini builds the foundation, shiitake brings the depth.

So, Cremini vs. Shiitake: Which Is Better?

We don’t think one needs to win.

Cremini offers a balanced, earthy mushroom flavor while shiitake adds a richer savory character. Combining them creates more complexity than relying on either mushroom alone.

And that combination became the starting point for our newest soup.

Why We Use Both in Our Roasted Mushroom Soup

Our Roasted Mushroom – Cremini & Shiitake Soup starts with both mushroom varieties and combines them with white beans, cauliflower, onions, carrots, celery, olive oil, garlic, parsley, black pepper and thyme.

No heavy cream needed.

The result is a savory, plant-based mushroom soup made with real ingredients and nothing artificial. It’s also dairy-, soy- and gluten-free.

And because real life doesn’t always leave time to make mushroom soup from scratch, it’s ready to eat hot or cold and can also be used as a soup, sauce or base.

More Than Just Mushroom Soup

Try it straight from the bowl, use it as the base of a quick dinner, pour it over grains or vegetables, or build your own recipe around it.

Because sometimes the easiest way to eat more real food is simply having something good ready when you need it.
